Hiking
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North
Carolina create a picturesque landscape perfect
for anyone who enjoys and appreciates the
outdoors. Activities like hiking, mountain
biking, and rock climbing offer great
opportunities for getting out and seeing parts
of our Western North Carolina Mountain region
that are not as easily accessible by a motor
vehicle. Ashe County is home to some wonderful
NC hiking trails, and the Blue Ridge Parkway
winds through numerous parts of the county
creating stunning, long range views. On this
page we’ve detailed some of the more popular
spots to hike around Ashe County and West
Jefferson.
One
of the best known areas for hiking in Western
North Carolina is near Three Top Mountain and Mount
Jefferson State Park. Named for the three
gigantic rock outcrops that rise above the
rolling hills of Ashe County, The Three Top
Mountain area is made up of Mount Jefferson,
Bluff Mountain and Paddy Mountain. Here the
elevations range from 3,000 to 4,800 feet above
sea level, and wildlife and native plant species
flourish to create a wonderfully unique
ecosystem.
High above
West Jefferson, atop Mount Jefferson,
you can enjoy the state park area and spend the
day hiking the Rhododendron Trail or the Summit
Trail. You'll come across several overlooks,
each
offering some spectacular, breathtaking views that
you will not find anywhere else in the region.
Bluff Mountain sits at an elevation of 3,792
feet and offers hikers an opportunity to
enjoy the pristine and peaceful Blue
Ridge Mountains. Bluff Mountain Preserve
was established in 1977 by The Nature Conservancy and is
a great place to enjoy birding as well as
hiking. Nearby, Paddy Mountain’s 4,331 foot
summit offers some phenomenal views as well as a
chance to see some of the native wildlife in the
area in their various, diverse natural habitats.
Visitors to Paddy Mountain will enjoy the
different animals, wildflowers and mild climate
they find at the mountain's different
elevations. You may even see a black bear or
mountain bobcat!
Another
great place to enjoy hiking in Ashe County is
the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are several NC hiking
trails and great picnic areas on the Blue Ridge
Parkway as it passes through Ashe County. The Jumpingoff Rocks trail is a great parkway trail
for beginners. Located nearby the Blue Ridge
Parkway is the New River State Park. Here you
can canoe over 26 miles of the beautiful South
Fork of the
New River and explore the open
fields and great trails found throughout.
Crystal Ridge neighborhood and community is

the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains.
