The New River
Far
away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life
is the beautiful region of Ashe County North
Carolina. Situated high in North Carolina’s Blue
Ridge Mountains, Ashe County boasts panoramic
views that span for miles and spread across
forested lands, lush pastoral valleys, and
scenes along the peaceful New River. The New
River is a special part of Ashe County, providing a
great deal of fun things to do and creates
stunning mountain scenes.
As a tributary of the Kanawha River, the New
River flows throughout West Virginia, Virginia
and the Ashe County, Blue Ridge Mountain region
of North Carolina. Named an American Heritage
River in 1998, the New River’s name presents an
oxymoron as the New River is actually believed
to be one of the oldest rivers in the world.
While there is no way of ranking the world’s
rivers according to age, the New River is
believed to be perhaps older than the mountains
themselves as it flows south to north, which is
against the natural topology of the Appalachian
Mountains. Furthermore, most of the rivers found
in our Blue Ridge Mountain region flow in a west
to east pattern, rather than the south to north
flow found in the New River.
In
Ashe County the New River is a winding and lazy
river flowing gently through several
locations throughout the county creating the
perfect spots to
fish, canoe, kayak, and tube.
You will enjoy being able to relax, swim and
simply enjoy the unspoiled, private scenes
throughout this secluded Western North Carolina
location. In addition to the gorgeous scenes
that the New River in Ashe County creates, the
river is also one of the most diverse and unique
ecological hotspots in the Southern
Appalachians. Filled with a variety of fish
species and plenty of unusual and endangered
plant species and animals, several parts of New
River in Ashe County are protected by the Nature
Conservancy.
